To make sure you understand the ins-and-outs of how car financing works, Clay Cooley wants to share some basic delaership finance TERMINOLOGY with you.
- APR: Annual Percentage Rate
- Backend: Another dealer profit center that includes financing, warranties, VIN etching, and other things dealers may add to the deal when you’re setting up financing.
- Backdoor Monday: Additional rebates the dealers get from the manufacturers for selling their cars.
- Factory Invoice: The invoice from the manufacturer to the dealer that is supposed to be the dealer’s purchase price - it is not necessarily an actual cost because of holdbacks, advertising fees, gasoline charges, dealer discounts, rebates, and other dealer incentives.
- Front-loaded Loans: Loans that require payback for mostly interest in the beginning so that the lender gets paid first.
- Holdback: Money the dealer gets from the manufacturer if he sells a car within a specified time (usually three months).
- M.S.R.P.: The total Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. This may not include items the dealer has added such as security systems, VIN etching, etc. The total Base M.S.R.P. is the suggested retail price with no options. The total Base M.S.R.P. plus options price includes all options. Both may still not include additional items that have been added at the dealership (as mentioned above).
- Prepayment Penalty: A fee that some loans charge if you pay off the loan before the end of the term.
- Simple Interest Loans: Also known as “flat rate interest”, simple interest is calculated only on the initial amount of the loan by multiplying the principal balance by the rate of interest by the term of the loan. This number is then divided by the number of months the loan for the amount of interest paid each month.
- Term: The length of the loan in months.
- Trade-in Allowance: The amount of money taken off the purchase price of the new car for the trade-in of your old car.
- Upside-down Loan: When you owe more on your car than its worth.

When you buy a new or used car from Clay Cooley you will not only get the best financing and loan options, you will get unbeatable prices, the best trade-in values and the best customer service.
Putting customer service first is the #1 priority at Clay Cooley, and that is why more customers drive from all over Texas to be a part of the Clay Cooley family. To make sure you understand the ins-and-outs of how car financing works, Clay Cooley wants to share the five basic sources of financing with you.
If you’re like most people, paying cash to buy a new Nissan, Mitsubishi or Suzuki car just isn’t in the realm of possibility. This means that you’re either going to be leasing the car, or buying the car by financing it. If you’re buying then you’re probably financing it through the dealership, a bank or credit union, an online financial institution, or maybe even a family member. Here are the pros and cons of the five:
- Dealership Pros - Convenient, fast and often competitive.
- Dealership Cons - High pressure, usually not competitive, big sales pushes and add-ons, loans are often front-loaded which is bad for you if plan to pay off the loan early.
- Bank or Credit Union Pros - Competitive rates, personal service, no sales pitch for add-ons, loans are usually simple interest loans with the interest spread evenly.
- Bank or Credit Union Cons - Not as convenient as dealership financing. You can’t set it up at night or on the weekend.
- Online Financial Institution Pros - Usually competitive rates, quick and easy.
- Online Financial Institution Cons - Not a personal service, dealing with an unknown, beware of scams.
- Home Equity Loan Pros - You can deduct some of the interest from your taxes and the rates are competitive.
- Home Equity Loan Cons - You’re tying your car to your home which may be risky.
- Family Member or Friend Pros - Personal service, easy, sometimes flexible and usually comes with competitive rates.
- Family Member or Friend Cons - Could jeopardize a relationship!
Clay Cooley has plenty of customer service members at their Texas dealerships to help you with additional questions and get you started. Hurry in today and test-drive the Nissan, Mitsubishi or Suzuki of your dreams and visit the finance department from either the Nissan, Mitsubishi or Suzuki location and they’ll have you driving off in a new vehicle the same day!

How do you use your car’s Air Conditioning efficiently this summer? Check out these tips from Clay Cooley of Dallas, Texas where their Nissan, Mitsubishi & Suzuki customers know a thing or two about staying cool during the hot Texas summers.
Clay Cooley Motor Company wants you to know what EPA mileage ratings don’t tell you. As you try to fight the high cost of gasoline and cut your carbon footprint, is that running your AC can knock between 5 and 25 percent off your car’s fuel efficiency. Since, on average, Americans run their Nissan or any car air conditioner about half the time they are in the car, the AC needs to run as efficiently as possible.
- It’s a myth that opening the windows is cheaper than running your air conditioner.
- It doesn’t matter what temperature your run your AC on. Like a furnace, they operate at the same temperature no matter what they do. It’s the length of time that they run that affects the temperature. The compressor, which uses up most of the power in an air conditioner, doesn’t work any harder just because you’ve cranked up the level. The fan works harder, but it uses almost no power.
- Turn it on and off - run your AC at the lowest possible setting/temperature and then once you’re comfortable turn it off (and then on again) to control the temperature. Setting it at a higher temperature is far less efficient. The system actually mixes hot air from the heater with cold air from the air conditioner to deliver air at the requested temperature.
- Use outdoor air - Your AC gives you a choice of using either outside air or re-circulating air from inside the cabin. Choose whichever gives the air conditioner coolest air to work with. If it is hotter in the car than it is outside, set the air conditioner to use outside air. If it’s cooler inside than out, switch to re-circulated air (sometimes labeled “Maximum AC”).
- Change the filter (if there is one) - If the filter is dirty, only part of the cool air reaches you, no matter how hard or long your air conditioner is working.
- Take advantage of shade - Whenever possible give the air conditioner less work to do by parking in the shade, using sun shades and consider tinted windows that reduce solar gain.
- Use the fan right away - The AC goes to work as soon as you turn it on. It’s a myth to wait until the engine warms up or until the compressor builds up pressure.
- Run it in winter - There’s a lubricant in the refrigerant that keeps the compressor oiled and ready to go and helps keep the seals and hoses supple, so that they don’t crack and let the refrigerant leak out. Some carmakers use the air conditioner as the car’s defroster for this very reason.
These helpful tips should keep you cool in the summer heat whether you’re in Dallas, Irving, Fort Worth, Arlington, or any other city in Texas and around the country. While their Master-Trained technicians get your Nissan, Mitsubishi or Suzuki ready for summer, you can test-drive a new or used vehicle, talk to the finance department about loan options, or simply relax and enjoy the cool showroom.
